This is Tanzania’s most travelled route for a reason: seven days covers four genuinely distinct landscapes without feeling rushed, and each one delivers on its own reputation. Tarangire’s elephant herds move between ancient baobabs. Lake Manyara’s groundwater forest holds lions that climb into the branches, an oddity found in only a handful of places on Earth. The Serengeti’s endless plains are exactly as vast as the name suggests. And Ngorongoro Crater closes the trip with the closest thing East Africa has to a guaranteed Big Five day, all five species concentrated inside a single collapsed volcanic caldera.
Accommodation strikes a deliberate balance: well-run, well-located lodges from the Serena and Sopa collections carry most of the trip, and the final night trades a standard crater-rim hotel for Gibb’s Farm — a working coffee estate turned lodge in the Ngorongoro highlands, in operation since the 1920s and consistently rated among the most characterful stays in northern Tanzania. Upon arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will have a short transfer to Arusha Coffee Lodge, which is located on a working coffee plantation just outside of town. You’ll have the rest of the day free to explore. You can take a walk through the coffee gardens or relax after your flight. In the evening, your guide will hold a briefing to discuss the week ahead.
A picturesque two-hour drive takes you to Tarangire, renowned for its ancient baobab trees and home to one of Tanzania’s largest populations of elephants, particularly attracted to the Tarangire River during the dry season. Upon arrival, you’ll have lunch before heading out for your first afternoon game drive along the riverbank. From June to October, it’s common to see herds numbering in the hundreds during this time.
A shorter drive of about ninety minutes takes you to Lake Manyara, a park characterised by its striking contrasts. Dense groundwater forests suddenly give way to open grasslands and the alkaline lake itself. The lions in Manyara exhibit a unique behaviour—they are known for climbing into the branches of acacia and fig trees, a trait that can be observed in only a few locations across Africa. The birdlife along the lakeshore is excellent throughout the year, although the number of flamingos fluctuates with the lake’s water levels from season to season.
The longest drive of the trip takes you through the Ngorongoro Highlands before descending onto the endless plains of the Serengeti. Along the way, there will be a stop at Olduvai Gorge, often referred to as the “Cradle of Mankind,” where some of the most significant early hominid fossils have been discovered. Arriving in central Serengeti in the afternoon, the first game drive showcases the vast scale that the park is renowned for.
Spend a full day exploring the central Serengeti’s vast plains and distinctive kopjes. This area is home to a robust year-round population of lions, cheetahs, elephants, and — depending on the season — the migrating herds of wildebeest. Additionally, this day is ideal for arranging an optional dawn hot air balloon safari over the plains, followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush.
The drive back ascends from the Serengeti into the cooler, greener highlands of Ngorongoro, arriving at Gibb’s Farm in the late afternoon. Originally established as a coffee estate in the 1920s, the farm still cultivates and roasts its own coffee while growing much of the produce served at dinner in its gardens. The afternoon is flexible, allowing for options such as a stroll through the grounds, a coffee tasting, or simply enjoying the rare chance to relax after five days of game drives.e days of game drives.
An early departure for the roughly hour-long drive to the crater rim, timed to reach the floor before the mid-morning cluster of vehicles the crater is known for. Ngorongoro holds one of East Africa’s most reliable black rhino populations alongside dense concentrations of lion, elephant, and the rest of the Big Five, all within a single 260-square-kilometre caldera floor. After a full morning on the crater floor and a picnic lunch, the drive continues to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport for an onward flight.

Yes, deliberately. Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater make up what's consistently described as Tanzania's classic Northern Circuit — the route most first-time visitors specifically search for. This itinerary follows it closely rather than trying to reinvent it.
This one prioritises the most well-known parks and a more accessible price point, using established lodge chains rather than private concessions. If avoiding crowds matters more to you than visiting the most famous names, Ayal's Grand Tanzania Safari covers less-visited sectors of the Serengeti instead.
Tanzania's dry seasons (roughly June–October, and a shorter window in January–February) generally offer the clearest game viewing. The Serengeti's central plains hold resident wildlife year-round, so this route doesn't depend on migration timing the way a Kogatende-focused itinerary would.
Possibly, depending on timing — central Serengeti sees migration herds passing through at various points in the year, but sightings aren't guaranteed on any fixed schedule. If the migration is the primary goal, worth discussing specific travel dates with Ayal directly.
