Safari Overview

About This Safari

Not every safari requires a week and a long-haul flight. Some of the quietest, most absorbing wildlife encounters in Kenya happen within two hours of Nairobi, on the papyrus-fringed shores of Lake Naivasha.

Naivasha is one of the few freshwater lakes in the Great Rift Valley, and its ecology reflects that rarity. Hippo pods rest in the shallows. Fish eagles announce themselves from yellow fever trees. Colobus monkeys move through the canopy above the lakeshore lodges. And just to the south, Hell’s Gate National Park offers something genuinely unusual in Kenya — the chance to walk among wildlife on foot, with no vehicle between you and the landscape.

Two days is enough time to do both properly. A boat ride on the lake in the afternoon of your first day. A walking safari through Hell’s Gate’s volcanic gorge the following morning. The pace is unhurried throughout — this is the Rift Valley, and it has been here a long time.

Safari Highlights

  • A boat safari on Lake Naivasha among hippo pods, fish eagles, and waterbirds found nowhere else in the country

Day by Day

Your Safari Itinerary

The drive from Nairobi takes roughly two hours, climbing out of the city before descending into the Rift Valley through a viewpoint that makes the scale of the escarpment suddenly legible. You arrive at your lakeside lodge before noon, with enough time to settle in before an afternoon boat ride on the lake. Hippo pods are a near-certainty; the birdlife is constant and varied; the pace is set by the water itself. Dinner at the lodge as the sun drops behind the valley wall.

L D

An early departure for Hell’s Gate National Park, fifteen minutes south of the lake. The park is unusual in Kenya — vehicles are secondary here, and the preferred way to move through it is on foot. Your guide sets the pace through the main gorge, past Fischer’s Tower, between walls of red-orange volcanic rock that narrow overhead. Zebra, eland, giraffe, and buffalo are encountered at close quarters, with nothing mechanical between you and them. After the gorge, lunch at the lodge before the drive back to Nairobi, arriving mid-afternoon.
