15-Day Kenya Safari and Beach

The drive south from Nairobi runs through Kajiado County, acacia scrubland widening into flat Maasai steppe as the city falls completely away. Kilimanjaro appears first as a suggestion on the horizon, pale and enormous above the cloud line, before the park gates bring you into Amboseli proper. Your first game drive begins in the afternoon, in a light that photographers spend entire careers chasing.

Two game drives (morning and evening) are structured around the hours the animals choose for themselves. Amboseli’s swamps anchor the park’s ecosystem: elephant herds, sometimes numbering in the hundreds, move through the wetlands throughout the day. The mountain is at its clearest at first light, before the equatorial heat builds its veil of haze.

You leave Amboseli’s dust and drive north into the Great Rift Valley, arriving at Lake Naivasha in the early afternoon. The freshwater calm here is a different world to the savannah — this is a landscape of papyrus beds, yellow fever trees, and fish eagles so numerous their calls overlap. A boat ride on the lake is the afternoon’s only obligation.

A short morning visit to Hell’s Gate National Park, where walking among wildlife is permitted in a way that is rare in Kenya — zebra, eland, and giraffe at a pace set by your own feet, not a vehicle’s engine. You continue north to Lake Nakuru in the afternoon, arriving in time to settle in before the evening closes.

The park’s alkaline lake draws both white and black rhinos to its shores, alongside lions, leopards, and birdlife that shifts with the water levels each season. Two game drives (morning and afternoon) in a reserve compact enough to cover thoroughly in a single day.

The road to the Mara passes through Narok and the wide Maasai territories that surround the reserve’s boundary. You arrive in time for lunch and an introductory game drive in the late afternoon, your first look at the landscape that will define the next four nights.

A day given entirely to game drives, morning and evening. The Mara’s predator density is among the highest on the continent — lion pride dynamics, cheetah hunts, and leopard in the riverine fig trees are daily possibilities rather than rare ones. Between drives, the afternoon light at your camp is worth sitting in without an agenda.

Your second full day in the reserve, shaped by what you have already seen and what the morning brings. If your visit falls between July and October, the wildebeest are present in their millions, and the Mara River crossings become a daily vigil. In the evening, a visit to a nearby Maasai village — arranged with the community, not as theatre.

This morning is optional and worth taking seriously: a pre-dawn departure for a hot air balloon flight above the Mara, drifting without engine noise above animals that have not noticed your presence. A champagne breakfast in the bush follows landing, after which one last game drive brings you back to camp to pack.

A scenic transfer to the Mara airstrip and a light aircraft flight east — the bush giving way to highlands, then lowlands, then coast. You land at Ukunda Airstrip and are transferred to your beachfront property on Diani Beach. The Indian Ocean is twenty minutes away, and there is nothing else on the schedule today but arriving at it.

Three mornings, three afternoons, and three evenings with no set programme. The reef is accessible by snorkel or glass-bottomed boat. The beach is walkable for miles in either direction. Deep-sea fishing can be arranged for those who want it. Kite surfing, kayaking, and dhow sunset cruises are available through your property. Or nothing at all, which is equally valid after ten days of early alarms.

A final morning on the beach before transfer to Mombasa’s Moi International Airport, or a return flight to Nairobi for onward connections. Kenya ends the way it always should — with sun on water, and the quiet knowledge that you have seen more of it than most people ever will.
